FAQ – Requirements

Frequently asked questions about Gold Finger's deployment requirements:

  1. What are the minimum requirements to deploy Gold Finger?

Gold Finger is a simple 32-bit Microsoft Windows executable that can run on any Windows machine.

It can be installed in under two minutes on any domain-joined machine and requires absolutely no administrative access, agent installations, service configuration, or Schema changes at all to deploy.

Gold Finger only requires that it be deployed on a domain-joined machine and that the individual using it be logged on with a valid domain user account. Strictly speaking, the machine should have at least 25 MB of free disk space, at least 1 GB of RAM and a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

  2. Does the use of Gold Finger require the opening of any additional firewall ports?

No. Gold Finger does not require any additional ports to be opened on firewalls, other than those that may already be open and required for the normal functioning of Active Directory in an IT infrastructure.

  3. Can one specify explicit credentials when using Gold Finger?

Gold Finger was designed with security of all organizations running on Active Directory in mind, and thus employs Windows-integrated authentication to obtain authenticated and authorized access to Active Directory content.

Windows-integrated authentication requires that Gold Finger be installed on a domain-joined machine and used by an individual with a domain user account, in effect restricting its use to valid organizational users.

In effect, to minimize the possibility of misuse, it does not allow the specification of explicit credentials.

  4. How long does the Gold Finger take to generate an access report?

Gold Finger can typically generate an accurate access report on a single Active Directory object such as a domain user account in about one minute, and on 10,000 Active Directory objects in about ten minutes.

  5. Are there any special requirements for and any constraints in the Consultant versions of Gold Finger?

The only special requirement for the Consultant versions of Gold Finger is that the computer on which you run the Gold Finger must have a USB port. This is required because you will be issued a unique physical USB key which you will need to plug into the USB port to use Gold Finger.

The only constraint in the Consultant versions of Gold Finger is that they cannot be run in virtual machines because virtual machines typically do not have access to the host computer's USB ports.
